Car Trouble and Money Saving Tips

September 11, 2010

Today was my day to have fun. Traveling to my new friends to meet her dad who has dementia and was just placed in a dementia center. I also was going to meet her mom who had a stroke; hence, the reason for placing her dad in a home for dementia patients as the mom cannot watch the dad any more. We had great plans. The hospital was letting the mom escape for a few hours.

I got up, got the car packed with intentions of getting fuel and heading to her house. I figured leaving early, I would miss the traffic.

My car and my mechanic let me down. My car was dead, deader than a typical doorbell. I called AAA and the driver wanted to tow my vehicle to the mechanic instead of jump-starting the car. I allowed this, as I had to get gas and was afraid if I shut off the car it would again not start, not giving it enough time to charge. I was also afraid it was my alternator and I would break down out of town with most mechanic shops closed for the weekend.

Thank goodness, the tow truck driver did what he did. I should have given him a bigger tip. Yes, it was my alternator. $350.00 later, my car will be fine. A whole day wasted with no transportation.

My plans are re-scheduled until next weekend. This messes up next weekend. It is one of those things you have to get done kind of things. Next week I will be fueled and ready to go. My vehicle will not let me down.

Today, I finished my Friday work and did a bit of Monday’s to make Monday a little lighter load. I started a sprouting experiment, which you can read about below. As soon as they call me to pick up my car, they close at 4:00 p.m., I will be baking bread. I have wanted to do this for a few days. I bought a new book and I am looking forward to trying this preferment procedure. Most bread takes two days to complete.

I am looking for money saving tips. Do you know any? So far, I plan to enlarge my garden adding one more square foot that is 4 X 4 and planting winter crops. I am cooking my own beans from dried instead of purchasing canned. I am reading about canning and next season plan on canning my own tomatoes. You know anything canned is convenient but expensive. I bought a new motion detector light that is an LED and is amazing!! Any more tips for me?

I would love to put a TV antenna on my roof. I am unable to find anyone to do that for me. I guess either most people have family or friends who can do it or people these days just use cable or Direct TV. I pay 81 bucks a month and getting free TV would be FREE.
I can pick up a DVD recorder to supplement as a DVR of sorts and the antennae and would be free and clear in only 2-3 months.

There you have it. Does anyone use a TV antenna? Does anyone want to come install mine? I can feed you well and take you on my road for a great workout.

Sprouting Experiment

September 11, 2010

I was told you have to buy seeds specifically for sprouting. I was also told any ole seed will sprout. I am trying an experiment with Lentils.

I purchased a prepackaged bag of lentils. I rinsed them and placed them in my sprouting jar. I also rinsed and placed in a separate sprouting jar lentils purchased specifically for sprouting.

The only different in this experiment is the jar size. I did not have two large jars available. If I find the one jar needs to be bigger, I will empty my dried crackers and switch it over.

In about 3-4 days, we should have our answer. If there is no difference in sprouting, I plan to buy some chickpeas and try to make sprouted hummus for my lovely daughter.

Do any of you sprout? Do you eat store bought sprouts? If you eat store bought sprouts, is it only alfalfa or do you venture into the mung beans, lentils and the likes?

Carl’s Jr. Foot Long Burger

August 8, 2010

Can you believe it?? Carl’s Jr. Fast Food Hamburger Joint has a new burger coming your way soon. A FOOT LONG burger. FOR ONLY FOUR BUCKS!

They are trying to keep up with Subway’s foot long from what I am told. What happened to restaurants helping those who cannot and making their food healthier, not worse? Can you imagine the calories? One foot long, one jumbo fries and one jumbo drink.

Let us see, if you buy a Super star with cheese it is a whooping 920 calories and 58 grams of fat. Add french fries for 500 calories and 24 grams of fat. I was surprised there was no nutritional valve on their sodas so I got the numbers from McDonald’s. A 32 oz drink is a whopping 310 calories with 86 grams of sugar. This meal is a whopping grand total of 1730 calories and 82 grams of fat. What do you think the nutritional value will be of this foot long burger combo meal? It appears to be equivalent to three burgers… Let us guesstimate. 2760 calories? 72 grams of fat? Add the fries and drink… Ta DA… 3570 calories!!!! I cannot wait to see what the nutritional values are on this new item!

At least for those of use who have to go to a fast food restaurant they do have this…

Even this low carb version has 570 calories and 43 grams of fat.

The lesson to be learned…Nothing on a “Fast Food” restaurant’s menu is clean or worthy of eating. You can put together a great clean meal in less time than it takes to drive to a fast food place and buy their crap. I do not know many people who can ONLY but the low carb burger. Always, always some fries and a soda and/or shake will be ordered also.

Me, I just got home from the Framer’s market… Lettuce, celery, onions, okra, sweet potatoes, corn, strawberries and my downfall, sourdough bread.

I am going to try to see how many calories in my made at home turkey burger. Results coming soon.

July 24, 2010

I went hiking today. I made it past the County line. My upper stomach was bloated and hard. My fingertips got blue. I felt like crap. I could not force myself to go to the top. Mad at myself.

I did some research and my blood sugar was low. It has been a long time since I had a reaction and first time like this. I know I had a week with my mom eating crap and a week of not hungry and not eating well at all. I think this all added up to a too strenuous hike. I was not fueling my body properly, especially for this grueling climb in the heat. Lesson learned.

I know better, I know better!

This once again proves you have to eat clean!!!! To live a good live you have to eat clean and take care of your body. I wasted a whole day. I did not even feel well enough to work. I ate all day long trying to get my body bad to feeling good. Finally at about 10 p.m. I had energy, felt hydrated and was raring to go. I headed to bed. Thankfully, my job allows me to work the weekends.

This morning I feel great. I made my normal breakfast and plan on conquering this week with gusto. I will fuel properly and conquer the mountain on Friday. I cannot believe how stupid I was to back slide and ruin all the work I have done. I am hoping this well will shape me up and get me back on track.

After researching, here is what I learned…

I am supposed to eat breakfast 2-3 hours before a hike. (Hiking at 8:00 requires a normal last minute wake up call of 6:30. If I plan to eat 2-3 hours before a wake up call would be 4:30-5:30. Yikes! Not gonna happen.) Okay, I will just eat a great breakfast as early as I can. The Meal Replacement Protein Product is not an option before hiking.

For dinner the night before, they recommended spaghetti with a sauce with mushrooms and a sprinkling of cheese. Add a few pieces of bread and Bingo; you should be ready for a hike the next day.

Of course, another option for dinner is a great steak, potatoes and a side of vegetables.

Either one is doable.

Funny, I found a forum and they recommended going to McDonald’s for breakfast…Yikes. Are they kidding me?

I am struggling with dehydration and drink and drink. Once again, this I am sure is from my lack of clean eating. In addition, I am starving and never full. Again, a sign of crappy eating and not eating at all.

Life is one big learning event.

All not eating does is make you fat!!! All not eating does is make you weak. All not eating does is give you lack of energy. All not eating does is give you a big ole pimple on your chin… Well, I cannot blame that one on not eating.

Suggestions? Recommendations? How do you fuel yourself for a grueling uphill hike?

Off to work I go.

July 22, 2010

Those that asked, I finally posted some basic recipes. I will add the rest as I have time. I hope you enjoy them.

It was interesting to go back and look at some of the recipes I used to make. Lemon Roasted Potatoes had one cup of Olive oil and one stick of butter for only 3-6 large potatoes…Yikes.

Bon appetite.

Blogging, Canning and Stuff

July 22, 2010

I watched the news and saw a segment on Food Bloggers/Dieters.  They show how to take pictures and make the food look great.  This rolls over to Dieters.  The better your food looks the more enjoyment you get.  One hint they used was to use your best china.  Why wait.  Make your eating enjoyment memorable.  The best hint was to use cloth napkins.  Makes your meal feel more elegant.  These are such simple things you can do.

I know I have many smaller plates I use for my meals.  I can fill the plates up but keep the portions down low.  I buy beautiful plates one at a time.

I know I am supposed to just sit and eat but I always have the TV on or I am reading a book.  Multitasking.  They say this is bad. You need to sit and enjoy the foot one bite at a time and let your stomach come up to your brain.  I feel like it wastes time.  How about you?  Do you multitask while eating?

I am delving into canning and reading up on it.  I need a pressure canner.  Well, not in the budget.  I do have a pressure cooker.  I found the instruction book and was so excited to see I have a pressure cooker/canner.  Yahoo.  It is small and will only do four pint or half pint jars at a time, but that works for me.

I see all the jams use so much sugar.  I need to find a recipe with less sugar without compromising the taste and texture.  Does anyone out there do any canning?

In two days, I will be hitting my road again with my new friend. She has not been very successful, nor have I.  We have agreed to get to the top, or the very least to the bottom of the last really tough hill.  If we have to take a rest to get there, we will.  I have done it before and I am so much stronger now.  I can walk half way up the hill without stopping and my breathing is not horrible.  It is my noodle legs that stop me.

It is time to get back on the Bowflex, which I have stopped using.  I am seriously paying for it now.  The 52DC keeps me on track and I have gotten lazy and not working out very hard.  I bought a step and have not even used it once.  I was so gung ho and just have shoved everything off.  I am struggling getting out of bed.  I need BBM to give me a strong lecture or even Lazydays to boom at me.  LOL

Okay, I must get to work.  I think putting this in words for all to see will help motivate me to get out of bed and get moving.

Dork…Yep, ME

March 19, 2010

What a day. This 3600 challenge is killing me. I am FORCED to workout even when I do not want to. Just to make sure I stay on top of my numbers and not get behind.

I cannot figure out how to do the Prone Leg curl. I feel like I am going to fall off, or the very least slide down… I bet you all would laugh if you could see me trying to lie down and get my legs under the leg attachment and OMG, I cannot even explain it. My daughter will be here this weekend and I will have her show me. I feel like such a dork. Obviously, I need to work on my balance.

My shoulders are burning. I have to go ice.

I will update tomorrow.

More Tools for Success

March 14, 2010

I was contemplating painting a chalkboard on my wall to help to with my workout routine. I have a very bad short-term memory. Then I thought it would be quite messy with chalk dust an all. I thought about dry erase or magnetic paint. It is expensive and challenging to apply. My mom popped over with a bulletin board to put over my desk in my newly refinished office. However, I cannot reach it as my desk is too wide and stretching like that is horribly bad for my shoulders. She said she hates to return things so I said, hey, that would look good in my workout room. Moreover, we hung it. Yeah. Now I can post my routine on the board.

I keep finding things to help me on my journey. So many people have had a hand in those little things. Amazing how one person can just mention what they do and voila, you think, hey, that would work for me. That is why I love the forums so much. I get more info from the forums than I do professionals.

I am so excited; I cannot wait to start on the new 52DC. I just might have to start tomorrow, Monday.

Things I am trying: Chia seeds, Gobi berries, raw foods, dehydrating and green monsters.

New things I have learned: Egg puffs, yam potato like chips, cauliflower mashed potatoes, dehydrated flax seed crackers.

I need to work on my garden planning before it gets too late. I need to learn to plant things better and to take advantage of the land I have. Right now, I have two 4X4 boxes and a 4X4 circle. Of course, a planter with herbs is always there. Any suggestions on what to plant?

I know I am planting more zucchini and carrots this year. I might pass on the spaghetti squash. It just took over the planting area. Watermelon was great but it also takes a lot of room and such a long time to mature.

It was great having some free time this weekend to get my blog up-to-date and do some planning.

I am off to prepare my food with some chopping and dicing so next week will be easy.

Good luck on the next challenge everyone!

What I Have Learned So Far!

March 7, 2010

Things I have learned so far.

1. I found an awesome physical therapist who taught me a lot about the way my shoulder works. She gave me lots and lots of ways to work on my range of motion and my muscle strength. After doing so great on this 52DC and seeing my progress, I guess she knew what to do to make me stronger. I have not felt this fine in such a long time.

2. The “Big Book of Exercises” is amazing. What more can I say. Go now and buy it. You will not regret it. The cost is so minimal. Just learning the “pinch plate” exercise was worth the cost of the book but there is so much more inside. I absolutely love it.

3. Clean easy works if you are prepared. Not being prepared is asking for trouble.

4. Trying new things is amazing. Look at my vegetable challenge to get an idea.

5. Never, never believe a label. Never, never believe that scale. Always go by inches and how you feel and how you look. Numbers will make you go insane. I saw a You Tube video the other day on how to lose 10 pounds in just 10 minutes. Amazing.

6. Keep your 52DC friends close. The support they give you is irreplaceable.

7. Do not rely on friends. Just get outside and walk with or without them. Waiting for them just makes you lazy and does not get you anywhere close to your goals.

8. Borrow Brooklyn as much as you can because he is a fantastic workout partner.

9. That is all I can think of for now.

If you have any ideas you want to share, feel free to leave a comment. A lot of what I have learned is from other people and by reading lots and lots of books and websites.
